I’m hoping, nay, praying that Benjamin Netanyahu will win today’s election in Israel. All the more so since reading Johann Hari’s recent article – intended to be a demolition of him – in The Independent.

Hari writes:

“This is a man calling for the violent re-occupation of Gaza to “liquidate” its elected government.”

Good. Hamas are a rather nasty bunch.

“This is a man who says he will “naturally grow” the West Bank settlements. This is a man who says he will “never” negotiate over Jerusalem…”

Good.

“Accordingly, Netanyahu rubbishes every peace initiative offered by Israel.”

Not true. In fact, during his first reign as Prime Minister he personally negotiated with Yasser Arafat, signed the Wye River accords and handed most of Hebron to the Palestinians.

“He called the former prime minister “a traitor”, shortly before Rabin was murdered by a Jewish fundamentalist who agreed.”

And this makes him somehow responsible? No, but nice try.

“The other person who has surged ahead in the polls – and looks likely to be Netanyahu’s coalition partner – is Avigdor Lieberman, a Russian ex-nightclub bouncer”

Oh the snobbery of the modern Left! He also served in the IDF, and studied at international relations and political science at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

“The former head of Mossad, Ephraim Halevy, says that Hamas, ‘will have to adopt a path that could lead them far from their original goals’ if only Israel will begin the path of compromise. This would drain support for rejectionists such as Osama Bin Laden and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and make it easier to build international coalitions.”

It would also lead to pigs flying over the Middle East.

Good luck to Netanyahu. The world will become a far safer place with him in charge of Israel.

Well said. And more importantly, Bibi is the most serious about dealing with the biggest and most imminent threat to the area (and possibly entire Western world) at the moment: Iran. Netanyahu says (and I have a hunch he means it) that if he wins, Iran will not be allowed to go nuclear. Glad someone in the world has a sense of priority on this, especially as Obimbo is now talking about opening ‘talks’ with Iran in June, a good few months after Russia and Iran expect the nuclear capability to be well and truly in place. I wonder if he’ll take his two teleprompters with him. I’m not sure he knows *how* to talk without them.

I think Obama will find that while charm, charisma and self-help book sloganeering can win elections, none of those get you far with genocidal loons like Mahmoud.
