Six years ago today, somewhere between one and two million people marched through London against the liberation of Iraq. It was quite a varied crowd: from seasoned leftie marchers to Islamist hardliners and misguided do-gooders. They gathered under the most narcissistic banner: Not In My Name.

Liberating Iraq has not been an easy task – none of its supporters suggested it would be. These things are never easy. It wasn’t easy dealing with Hitler.

But six years on, let’s see where we are:

The genocidal monsters of Saddam Hussein’s regime have been removed from power and tried for their crimes against humanity.

Contrary to the (racist) prediction of the anti-war movement that the Arab world wasn’t ready for democracy, over 80 per cent of Iraqis – a far higher percentage than here – have exercised their right to vote. More than 14 million voted in last month’s council elections.

Exiled Iraqis are flocking back to their home to help build a free vibrant country.

Other Middle East countries – including Egypt and Libya – have responded to this by stepping closer to freedom themselves.

Iraqi children are no longer born into a nation of tyranny and genocide. Instead, they are born into a free, democratic country.

Not in their name.

One interesting thing that struck me about so many of those “anti-war” rallies was the flags waved. You saw countless PLO flags as well as many Hamas banners. One almost never saw an Iraqi flag, since (at least at first) Iraqis welcomed a war that would take the tyrant’s heel of their necks.

Also, no one seemed to seek the incongruity of waving flags claimed by Palestinian Arabs at a rally to protest the Anglo-American intervention in Iraq. What’s the connection?

Well, for some it was the thoughtless confabulation of the whole Middle East as an extension of the Arab-Israel conflict, for others the conspiracy theory that the Jews are behind everything they don’t like, so let’s wave the flags of their enemies.

But if you think on for a second you will see that the space seperating the “useful idiots” and the hardcore Jew hatters is getting narrower and narrower for all practical purposes. To borow a phrase from our Trotskyite friends; regardless of their subjective feelings about Jews, they are “objectively” antisemitic.

I agree with everything you say there, David. Particularly about the gap narrowing between the naive, not-in-my-namers (who think they are doing good with their silly banners), and the hardcore Jew-haters.

And yes the ‘Jewish war’ thing was ridiculous. While it’s safe to say that few in Israel mourned the end of a dictator who funded the suicide bombers that blew their people up, plenty in Israel opposed the Iraq war, largely on the grounds that Iran was the more pressing threat.

So there’s been net IMMIGRATION into Iraq since 2003 has there ?
Who the hell are you trying to kid by extruding this rubbish ?

  5. Chas Newkey-Burden says:

I didn’t say anything about “net immigration”.

Everything in my post is true. I’m not trying to “kid” anyone. I realise that the realities of Iraq will be harder for some to accept than others.
