You did us proud again
that link will only work for today. you need to actually put the file up.
Thanks for letting me know.
Chas, it was great to hear your actual voice, and you expressed your (and our) point of view very well. Next stop the BBC?
By the way your part starts at around 25 minutes not 30 (you don’t want to miss anything!)
Thanks so much Annie!
I do go on BBC Radio shows: JoAnne Good’s show on BBC Radio London and Henry Kelly’s on BBC Radio Berkshire.
Hi Chas – Great interview, great blog, great book – it would be great if you could write some words on ‘Why you decided to be pro Jewish/Israel’ – we are all very appreciative of your erudition and vocal support – but I cannot help but wonder if you’re not slightly bonkers putting yourself in the firing line so visibly – I listen to you, read your blog and can’t help but think ‘why is this non-jewish bloke doing this? it’s tremendous but is he certifiable?’
David does that mean that it is insane to support us? So that means the only sane people are antisemites, according to you.
Not at all Shmuel – my comment was meant to be mildly self deprecating and not insulting to Chas – it’s more that it is a sign of the times that anyone vaguely pro-jewish ‘must’ be a zio-con-nazi according received wisdom – I am impressed and slightly curious how Chas managed to break through this to form his own opinions against the backdrop of BBC/Guardian/Independent hamas propaganda.
I have perfectly intelligent people at work politely asking me why Israel wants to kill all the palestinian babies – these people are merely reflecting what they’ve heard/read in the papers (I take a deep breath at this point and start at the beginning – the fact that there are Arab MKs usually surprises people the most) – I would love to know how Chas reached his current view (which I 100% support) and moreover what motivates him to spend time & effort articulating – my comment was by no means intended to be rude but a reasonable question about a one person’s journey and yes it’s a damming depressing reflection of the times we live in.
Thanks for all your comments everyone. David, I can see that it is rare for a non-Jew take such a stance – particularly in the UK perhaps. I often get asked your question. I’ll try and blog an answer one day. Trouble is that so much of it is instinctive, parts of it are very personal and it is hard to come up with a fulsome answer. But I’ll try so stay tuned and thanks for appreciating!
Well, I am non-Jewish (by the standard definition) and am constantly exposed to the BBC, the Independent, the Guardian, Al Jazeera and Al Arabia not to mention my Algerian husband and am a Zionist nevertheless and a vocal supporter of Israel. Just because one is exposed to a particular viewpoint doesn’t mean one necessarily buys it or is devoid of any scepticism.
LJS – I see your point totally and please excuse me if I appear to stereotype, however folk like you and Chas who are able to form an independent thought out opinion I believe are very much in the minority – most seem very happy to toe the BBC/Guardian line and when you point out small details either go into denial or are amazed. eg, the Druze serve in the Israeli army, Israel is very small indeed (the Wales analogy), Israel is a democracy, Israeli courts do not use literal Old Testament as a way of handing out judgement, in 2000 Barak wanted to negotiate the West bank but got an intifada for his efforts – I could go on but won’t
