I’m not familiar with Steve Sheinkin, but the rabbi in the wild west schtick was done in 1979 when Robert Aldrich made “The Frisco Kid” with Gene Wilder:

Been a long time, but the scene I most remember is Wilder stumbling on a community of Amish on his way to take up his post as spiritual leader to a Jewish community in California Gold Rush Days and being mistaken for one of them, or maybe he mistook them for being Hassids.
