Many of you will have heard how The Guardian went to town against Israel yesterday, off the back of a ’special investigation’ by Clancy Chassay. Well, brace yourself because there’s a big shock coming at the start of the next paragraph.
Chassay’s report is based on a hideous combination of unproven allegations and easily disproved nonsense. Melanie Phillips dismantles it brilliantly – I mean really brilliantly – here. As the lady herself would say, do read it all. Maximum respect to Melanie for her article.

Melanie Phillips is truly amazing, and extremely thorough in her research. The trouble is – who is she going to convince besides those of us who are convinced already? Don’t expect her article to get any wider a readership than the pages of the Spectator and perhaps the Daily Mail, whose readership is already pro-Israel.
The question always remains: how can we counter these vicious lies and this terrible propaganda? Sometimes it seems hardly worth bothering. I find it all very disheartening.
Forward her article to everyone you know.
This article should be on every Journalism course. And it was published by 4pm, so even assuming she started at 8am that’s still only 8 hours. Quite extraordinary. A master at work.
Chas, everyone I know either reads Melanie regularly or agrees with her (and our) point of view. I regularly “troll” anti-Israel forums under a pseudonym but if I try to post anything by Melanie Phillips the responses I get range from “well, she would say that!” to “why are you posting from a hate site?” (seriously) to “who can believe that bigot anyway?”.
That is what I mean when I ask how we can counter these slanders when they have already gone round the world and back again.
I wonder how many of “Mad Mel’s” detractors know that she was a senior editor at the Guardian at one time, and is, among other honours, a recipient of the Orwell prize for journalism (1999).
She does not demolish the allegations “brilliantly” or otherwise. All she does is throw around hysterical allegations of anti-semtism against anybody who could possibly believe that the Israeli armed fores are guilty of atrocities. It is an utterly rubbish article.
I think you need to read her article again. Or perhaps it’s beyond you.
It does not matter how many timesIi read it. It is still a pile of crap. How can you possibly take seriously any article that begins, “Not to be outdone by the Ha’aretz blood libel”?
Wikipedia (not the most academic of sources but it will suffice for the current purposs) defines the blood libel as:
“Blood libels are false and sensationalized allegations that a person or group engages in human sacrifice, often accompanied by the claim that the blood of victims is used in various rituals and/or acts of cannibalism. The alleged victims are often children.”
Ha’aretz is Israel’s oldest newspaper. How likely is it that they are publishing a “blood libel”?
The evidence is clear. Perhaps it’s that you are blinded by evidence that disproves your prejudices.
The evidence is clear for what? That Ha’aretz believes that Jews kill and eat babies? Because that is what “Mad Mel” has just accused Ha’aretz of.
If you stop focusing on her introduction and focus instead on the facts throughout the article, you’ll see how strong her evidence is.
