Good luck to all today’s marathon runners, especially the first-timers. I have run two marathons (finishing times: 4hrs 3mins and 4hrs 20 mins) and there’s nothing like the first time!
Eagle-eyed viewers will spot me in this video of me finishing my second marathon. I am in a light blue t-shirt, punching the air as I cross the line (at 47 seconds and repeated from a different angle at 55 seconds).
Note how sprightly I look after 26 miles and be impressed.

It’s far too hot to be running today
You’re right Lynne. I just did a five-miler and was pleased today was not a long-run day for me.
very impressed!
Thanks! That second marathon was very tough. It was a very windy day and we were running into the wind for a lot of the course. It was like running a marathon while pushing a shopping trolley full of heavy goods. I hope the runners today are having it better, though it seems a touch too warm to be ideal conditions. Respect to them all. The marathon is one thing in life nobody can cheat at. If you get round the 26 miles (even those who walk most of it and take 6 or more hours) you have done something amazing. But be warned, you will only be able to walk downstairs backwards for days afterwards!
Suitably impressed. Though I must say that I’m pleased that YouTube has not yet found a way to capture the smell of the finishing line.
