My Simon Cowell biog – and this very blog – are mentioned in The Independent today:

Chas Newkey-Burden’s unauthorised biography of Simon Cowell, out next month, will, says Amazon, “lift the lid on the professional and private life of one of Britain’s most eligible bachelors”. Presumably Cowell should be quaking in his Gucci loafers. Or maybe not. On his blog, Newkey-Burden admits to being a fan of the high-trousered one, describing him as “wonderful”, panting about how he admires his attitude to fame. No hatchet jobs here, then.

You’ll have to wait and see

You have got to read and respond to an article in this weeks, The Grocer ( trade magazine ).On page 21 there is the most anti Israel diatribe I have ever read by a guest journalist Joanna Blythman. I have been subscribing on and off for over 30 years to this quite decent publication but this venomous article proves that the vast majority in this country are totally ignorant of the real facts in the middle east. The editor has been given an article to publish and his ignorance allows a deluded arseole free rein to poison minds.

Better to pant over Simon Cowell than pant over Islamic terrorists as most Indie hacks do.

Thanks Yosal. I haven’t read The Grocer article and cannot find it online. But I’ve read stuff by Joanna Blythman on Israel in the past. It was absolutely hopelessly naive.

I know what you mean Ted. But I was pleased for the plug I must say!

Great pics. Glad they’re enjoying London.Help needed. Jane Czyzselska Editor of DIVA magazine wrote a piece entitled “Gay Pride in Tel Aviv” in last Sat’s Times (page 32 of Weekend section) which was mainly positive but spoilt it by writing “Amid the city’s centenery celebrations, praise for the White City’s Bauhaus legacy is considered by some to be suspect, however. In his controversial book White City Black City, the leftwing architect & lecturer Sharon Rotbard implies that the focus on the White City is a smokescreen for the elimination of Arab heritage in Jaffa, out of which Tel Aviv originally grew.”

Well no it didn’t. Tel Aviv was established on empty sand dunes 100 years ago. Jaffa was not exclisively Arab either. Under the British Mandate during 1917–1920, there were thousands of Jewish residents in Jaffa. A wave of Arab pogrom attacks during 1920 and 1921 caused many Jewish residents to flee and resettle in Tel Aviv. The 1921 riots (known in Hebrew as Meoraot Tarpa) began with a May Day parade that turned violent. The Arab rioters attacked Jewish residents and buildings. The Hebrew author Yosef Haim Brenner was killed by Arabs in Jaffa.
And in my humble opinion there is plenty of Ottoman etc heritage in Jaffa.
I’d like to know why this woman used an ostensible travel article to have a dig at Israel. Do you know her?

here’s a link to the offending article I mentioned:
    http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/travel/destinations/middle_east/article6796221.ece.
and in the online article she refers to Tel Aviv as “the Israeli capital”!

  7. Chas Newkey-Burden says:

I don’t know her but I just wrote to her about this, clarifying. The introduction in the online article might (where it says Tel Aviv is the capital) might not have been written by her. Might just be a lazy/ignorant sub-editor.
    Thanks for your comments.

Many thanks for taking this up Chas. Shame that such a generally positive article contained these inaccuracies.
