Digital Spy has an interesting story about Simon Cowell’s political ambitions:
‘Simon Cowell would reportedly like to stage a political showdown in the style of The X Factor during the run-up to the next general election.
‘The media mogul said that a debate between Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Conservative leader David Cameron could be injected with a bit of “fun” with music and “loads of spotlights”.
‘Cowell told GQ that he would be up for the challenge. He said: “Like the presidential debates in America. I’d like to produce that here. I would! Just for the hell of it! Make it a bit more fun.”‘

Oh, G-d no… that is the worst thing about American elections. It should be serious, not entertainment. I hope he sees sense.
Fantastic. Not only is it a good idea and something that would be entertaining, it would no doubt attract a huge television audience. That section of the population who admire Simon Cowell and like watching his programmes but would normally take no interest in politics may be inclined to watch the programme. In the event that they do I think it could only be a good thing.
Cowell would inevitably come out of the natural winner in the debate though as he no doubt slate all participants irrespective of party. He knows it would be unwise for him to show any political bias and the public love his put downs. This leads to a problem for the politicians in question and as such they may just refuse to take part. They would be compared to contestants on a reality television show, have not much upside and a potential significant amount of downside by agreeing to such a debate. Consequently, I do not think it likely that it would occur. Despite this, I think it would be a fantastic programme and compelling viewing. Always the professional, Cowell would be well briefed and ensure that his questions to the politicians are cutting and that his remarks are highly amusing. We can dream.
