Thanks very much – really enjoying your daily updates!
This was a particularly beautiful video post. I got all choked up listening to it!
The Mahane Yehuda is really one of the most wonderful places in Israel. When I lived in Jerusalem in 2002, alone, in a downtown residential hotel which was nearly empty because the second intifada had chased tourism away, I would go to the Mahane every night to buy food for dinner. I got to know different stall keepers and my daily interactions with them — the bargaining, their kidding about my rudimentary Hebrew, the halting conversations we were able to patch together out of a little English and Hebrew — were my sustenance, as well as the gorgeous mangos, feta, and salmon they sold me. There was a special poignancy about being in the souk then because it had been suicide bombed so many time during the second intifada — as was that entire stretch of Jaffa road leading up to the souk.
The crush of people made it a natural target. The young soldiers at the entrances to the market seemed like a very thin green line (though I suppose there were plenty of undercover people around too.) So I was terrified to be there but also compelled to be there — for the sights and sounds and company.
But Chas I hope they’re planning to take you up north, to some of the border kibbutzim! And the Golan is very beautiful and inspiring!
Terific, Chas. Keep it coming. Shabbat shalom.
Another good one Chas. Nothing like a group of dancing Hassids to lift the spirit. Sounds like you’re ready for a belated Bar Mitzvah!
The thought has crossed my mind!
A Bar Mitzvah at the Kotel would be a peak experience
Chas, I loved what you said about feeling “blessed up”. You put into words my exact feeling every time I go volunteer in Mahane Yehuda. It was great meeting you and talking to you!
Enjoy the rest of your trip!
Thanks Michal. It was wonderful to meet you, you’re lovely. Have a great week, and thanks again!
Kol Rina!!! That’s (one of) my local synagogue(s)
I don’t pray there much, though – the high energy you describe so well can be a bit too much for me on a weekly basis. But for others, and once in a while for me too, it’s lovely!
Fantastic stuff, Chas! Really interesting to get your perspective on things. Hope the hiking goes well!
Loved this post Chas. It reminded me of my experience back in June watching Shabbat by the Wall. Joyful certainly sums it up. I’m finding your videos really interesting and I’m learning more about Israel. Enjoy Tel Aviv.
Fantastic! I’m loving your daily reports. I’m catching up all in one go. You’re making me homesick and I live here!
