One of the four bloggers sharing the Once In A Lifetime trip is Ryan Mauro. He’s an amazingly interesting and fun guy from New Jersey. Here I interview him about his experiences in Israel and his blogging. (Apologies for my slightly shaky camera work.)

After all what he said, he just have to change the name of it’s web site… From World’s Threat to World’s Solution…
Cool guy. Intruiging chat.
The reason why Americans (and probably others) do not know much about Israel may be the unwillingness of the media to report on anything other than the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
I have a friend who’s a journalist. She told me that she tried to sell articles about Israeli culture and technology, but that the editors she approached turned her down. They thought that Israeli technology was an “old story,” and as for the culture, they weren’t interested.
Apparently, they didn’t consider Israeli culture and technology to be newsworthy. But I suspect that their attitude may have been informed by a deep-seated hostility to Israel, and therefore a discomfort with the idea of reporting on anything else about Israel (other than war), especially if it’s positive.
Our Christian pilgrim group felt totally safe when we visited about 72 sites in Israel in January. When we were by a church in East Jerusalem we suddenly experienced a few Arab youth throwing stones at us for a few seconds. (Next time we’ll bring water balloons!) When I returned to Canada, the media was making a BIG DEAL of ongoing violence in Israel, as evidenced by Arab youth throwing stones at the soldiers. I had to laugh. The media can make a mountain out of a mole hill. There is hope for peace in the Holy land. Things look very good, as friendships flourish among individuals of different faiths. Peace be with you!
@ Joanne: Positivity in American media won’t sell. Ratings plummet if they take a stance. Look @ Fox News. Our media is very skewed, unfortunately.
“Israel My Glory” magazine from Friends of Israel first gave me the insight as to what’s been happening over there; the truth about Israel. That is where I first learned that Israel is on top when it comes to education, technology, becoming “green” and much more. I actually stumped some JW’s @ my door one day with knowledge from what I had been reading about Israel fulfilling it’s prophecy. Truly amazing.
Brenda,
I don’t know about Israeli educational standards, which I hear are actually going down, but I take your point about the universities and the high-tech industry. It blew my mind when I learned that, when it comes to patents, Israel is third in the world after the US and Japan. There are all sorts of facts like that one can see online but never in the MSM.
Take a look at this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5tDDkvXSI8
And thanks for the “Friends of Israel” reference.
Thanks for the youtube video! Very cool. I found an interesting one there, also. Here is the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=saeky9I5T9c&feature=related
I was just at my Bible study, where I learned that one woman in our very small town has made several trips to the Palestinian State recently. She’s been holding town informational meetings in an effort to rally against Israel. Pretty disturbing. I may have to go check it out. I think this video would be perfect for an occasion such as this. It contains some of the same info, but it makes a statement.
